Can I use my DVD drive or an external DVD player to capture video for Moviemaker? - 8mm analog video player disappointed

I want to make and edit movies from Showbiz or Windows Movie Maker. I have only limited success with the Adaptec hardware, had to capture analog video player in showbiz, but a lot of trouble. Who knows if I can use a DVD player on my computer or an external DVD drive for capturing video to movie maker or showbiz? I would like to 8mm video to DVD movies and add special effects. I will transfer 8mm on the first DVD and I wondered whether I can put into the DVD drive on my computer and then capture it.
